A UK-based Patent Attorney is to travel to the Czech Republic later this month to help researchers make a difference to patients by propelling their findings out of the confines of the lab utilising technology transfer.

Dr Adrian Bradley, a Chartered Patent Attorney and Partner at Cleveland Scott York, which has offices in the City of London, St Albans, Reading and Brussels, will lead a workshop for medical researchers in Prague on 14 May 2018.

The workshop, hosted by Inventions & Investment (i&i) Prague and the Institute of Chemistry and Biochemistry (IOCB) Prague, will include an innovative intellectual property (IP) strategy business game, devised by Dr Bradley. The game will give participants the challenge of securing commercially effective protection for IP in a variety of scenarios.

Dr Adrian Bradley said: “The best way to transform laboratory findings into improvements in medical care is by commercialising these findings using intellectual property law, particularly patents.

“Patents restrict unauthorised copying of new inventions, making it possible to commercialise them through licensing agreements, for instance. This provides the necessary security to attract the significant investment that is usually required to develop them to the point where they can be used to improve the lives of patients.

“While this is straightforward in principle, effectively commercialising research findings in practice is a challenging undertaking, involving a number of considerations.

“This workshop is intended to help researchers understand these considerations and the relative costs and benefits of the different options open to them when it comes to commercialising their research.

“The business game will help them think through the key issues with a mind to how they work in practice.

“I hope participants will find this a rewarding session and that they will be able to take away skills that help them make a difference to patients’ lives.”

Dr Bradley has close links with the IOCB, having served as a member of its Business Advisory Board for a number of years. He is highly active in the field of technology transfer and regularly speaks on the topic at seminars and conferences around the world.
