Andrew Mackenzie

Andrew helps businesses register Intellectual Property Rights throughout the world and advises on commercial exploitation, enforcement and defence of those rights. He also carries out due diligence and advises on IP portfolio management.

He is a Legal 500 “Recommended Lawyer” over multiple years and has recently been described by The Legal 500 as “personable, articulate and a good listener.  He is listed as one of the World’s Leading Patent Practitioners in the Intellectual Asset Management Patent 1000, 2014-2017 and is recommended there for his “outstanding prosecution practice” and also as “a go-to guy for … companies that require close attention“. He has been recognised also as a “Recommended Prosecution Practitioner”, by IAM 2015-2017.

Andrew trained as a patent attorney both in London and Munich and qualified as a UK Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 1995. He is also a European Trade Mark Attorney. He regularly appears before the Examination, Opposition and Appeal Divisions of the European Patent Office in The Hague, Munich and Berlin to present cases orally on behalf of the firm’s clients. Andrew is also experienced in dispute resolution, providing infringement and validity opinions, and in US and UK High Court litigation.

Having worked as a design engineer with Jaguar Cars, Andrew has subsequently been involved directly in IP matters for Rover, and Koenigsegg and on components for vehicle manufacturers such as Ford, Jaguar Land Rover, Renault, Mercedes, Volkswagen, BMW and Porsche. In 2003, he was recruited to advise on IP in the legal department of Ford’s Premier Automotive Group (Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercury & Volvo) in Warwickshire, England. He heads our automotive and motorsport portfolio with particular emphasis on cleantech, and outside work campaigns Triumphs and Jaguars in Historic Motorsport. The Legal 500 commented in 2011 that Scott & York “is particularly recommended for automotive engineering, with work led by Andrew Mackenzie“. IAM Patent 1000, 2017 recommended Andrew and commented that he “has market-leading automotive sector expertise”.

For many years, Andrew has also advised companies in the telecommunications, software, and electronics industries (such as Microsoft, Apple, RIM, Matsushita, Nintendo, Ericsson, Hewlett Packard, Vodafone, Avaya, Alcatel, Qualcomm, Northrop Grumman, and Scientific Atlanta) and has extensive experience in these fields in addition to the mechanical, automotive, and space fields. At University he was tasked with coding a GUI WIMP interface for the Electronics & Computer Science department’s networked terminals and subsequently wrote commercial code as an engineer. He thus has deep understanding of e-commerce, software and business method patents. IAM 2015 says he is a telecommunications and software doyenand in 2017 said he has an “‘outstanding prosecution practice’ spanning the engineering, telecommunications, software and electronics industries”.

Before training as a Patent Attorney Andrew gained an Honours Degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Southampton sponsored by Racal Decca Advanced Developments (now Thales Research and Technology), and worked in engineering roles in the space and automotive industries.

Andrew is a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, EPI and FICPI, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys and also lectures on Intellectual Property Law as a Visiting Fellow at the University of Hertfordshire and also at Kingston University London. He is a “bestselling” webinar presenter and also has been an expert and head judge of the UK and Ireland Region of the European Satellite Navigation Competition.
