Trainee Patent Attorney – St Albans

Cleveland Scott York is looking for an enthusiastic trainee patent attorney to join the Electronics, Engineering and Software team at its St Albans office in autumn 2017.
The successful candidate will work closely with the team’s existing attorneys to provide patent drafting, prosecution and advice services to Cleveland Scott York’s growing portfolio of clients in the automotive, design, electronics, manufacturing, oil and gas, software and telecommunications sectors.
A candidate with any relevant technical degree at 2:1 or above will be considered, but a general Physics or Engineering degree would be particularly useful, as the role will involve exposure to a broad range of technologies. Experience of working in a research and development environment would be advantageous but is not essential. Above all, a candidate must be able to demonstrate her or his aptitude for and commitment to learning about and understanding new things.
A successful patent attorney requires an in-depth knowledge of technology and the law, and first class communication skills. As a trainee patent attorney you will have the opportunity to develop your skills in each of these core areas. Your training will cover all aspects of patents and related disciplines. In addition to gaining the requisite legal knowledge, you will learn to capture and convey complex technical details in a clear and concise manner and to advise clients within a legal framework.

A practical interest in science, particularly technology, is essential, as is the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Previous work experience, or post graduate study in the IP Law field will be advantageous but not essential.
